Top 7 Eczema Facts
by Evelyn Lim
Many do not have a clear understanding about what eczema really is. Here
are the top seven eczema facts that you need to know.
1. Eczema does not have a cure, but can be treated quite effectively
with regular and consistent care.
2. Eczema can affect just about anyone. Babies are even affected by eczema,
although their form of eczema is one that they normally grow out of. If
they do have it into adulthood, their symptoms are normally mild to moderate,
rather than severe. It does not matter your age, sex, or nationality,
you can get eczema at any point in your life.
3. Eczema is uncomfortable. Eczema symptoms include redness, itchiness,
inflammation, and sensitivity. The symptoms can range from very mild to
severe.
4. There are many different types of eczema. The types are usually separated
into two groups: Non-allergenic and Allergenic. Non-allergenic eczema
includes infantile seborrhoeic eczema (cradle cap), adult seborrhoeic
eczema (one example is dandruff), varicose eczema (normally affects elderly
individuals and seen around the ankles), and discoid eczema. Allergenic
eczema is usually caused by an allergic reaction and is usually related
to heredity. These sufferers are more likely to have asthma or hay fever
as well. They may have a flare-up from an allergic reaction to food, detergent,
dust, mold, etc.
5. There are treatment options for eczema. Conventional treatments usually
include a steroid, steroidal cream, and an emollient. However, there are
also several alternative treatment options that you may wish to consider;
such as acupuncture, TCM, homeopathy, etc.
6. Moisturizing regularly is the key to keeping eczema under control.
Regular moisturizing can help keep your skin moist and reduce irritation
and dryness. It is important to moisturize first thing in the morning
and before going to bed at night. It is also recommended that you moisturize
after bathing and while you are still damp to help lock some of the moisture
into your skin.
7. Refrain from soaking in water. This includes your hands. If you spend
a lot of time with your hands in and out of water, then you will want
to invest in a pair of vinyl or rubber gloves so that you can cut down
on the exposure to the water. Prolonged exposure to water will dry your
skin out. Take short, quick, lukewarm baths and short, warm showers to
help keep your skin in good condition. If your hands sweat while doing
work, then you will want to get a pair of thin cotton gloves to help absorb
some of the sweat.
Do not let eczema control your life. With putting in some effort and
gaining some knowledge, you can manage your eczema more effectively.
